A mangrove is a tree growing along coastlines, where the level of salt from the ocean water is very high.
There are more than 50 different species of mangroves around the world. In Cañas, you can observe different mangrove types in a variety of sizes and shapes. Their roots, falling to various degrees of depth into the water, gives them a very special and characteristic appearance.
Mangroves create forests, or swamps, across the coast that constitute a very important ecosystem that should be protected and respected. First, because those swamps become a habitat for a great variety of species. For example, a lot of marine animals use the mangrove forest as a safe place to give birth and grow their babies in the early stages of their life. In addition, mangrove forests are a great natural protection for the land itself, as they protect the shore from erosion. They also protect from the consequences of strong waves or from some natural disasters like storms and tsunamis. For those reasons, mangrove forests should be protected, especially as they are being threatened by coastal development, urbanization and other commercial activities.
What to expect from the mangrove tour?
Prepare to disconnect from the routine and to connect with nature! Exploring the mangrove forests will definitely take you on a relaxing and calming journey, for a duration of about 3 hours. The tour starts around 9 am, so that you can enjoy your time without the sun being too strong. We still recommend to use sunscreen and or to bring some clothes to cover your upper body while on the water, to protect from the sun.
