Are you ready to ride the waves of Playa Venao for the first time ? In this article, we share some basic information about them with the collaboration of Trico, one of the well established surf instructors in town at Safari Surf School.

About Trico

With more than 22 years of surfing experience, Trico has been teaching for more than 13 years with his surf school. The new location of Safari Surf School in Playa Venao has been established for 4 years now and is a reference in the region.

The surf season in Playa Venao

If some places have better surf during a specific season, Playa Venao is blessed with year round surfable waves. Either during summer (dry season) from December to April or during winter (rainy season) from May to November, there will be good surf waiting for you.

The dry season offers better weather conditions but also the beach is more crowded during that time of the year. During winter, meaning the rainy season between May to November, Trico mentions that there is obviously more wind and rain that can make the waves less suitable for surfing or a little bit more difficult. The direction of the wind also influences the quality of the waves, being better when coming from the shore side and then giving perfect surf conditions.

The best waves around Venao

As Trico says : If you have fun, you can surf anywhere!

First, it is important to learn to recognize good and bad waves. Simply put, a bad wave is when it breaks and closes itself up frontally and too quickly. A good wave will break from the side, left or right, not from the front, and will have a duration that enables to ride it. As an example, the waves at low tide require a bit more experience as they break faster.

Other than recognizing the good waves, there are specific spots around Playa Venao where they can be better suited depending on your level. Whether for beginners or advanced surfers, the main area with better waves is where the river joins the ocean, close to the Playa Venao Hotel Resort. Trico explains that this is mostly due to what is at the bottom of the water: the rocks and the soil.

For the beginners surfers, the safest waves are found on the left side of the bay, between Villa marina and Blue. In that area, the waves are smaller, as we can also observe that this is the preferred space for boats to park on the water of Venao, or for people to enjoy paddle boarding.

For more advanced surf enthusiasts, anywhere in Venao could be good, especially where the waves are bigger with a big swell. Trico also named a few beaches around Playa Venao that offer good advanced waves where there is a point break : El Ciruelo, Punta Marfil, Cambutal and Guanico.

Venao has it all!

The good surf is not the only thing that is attractive to this Playa! As a long term surf instructor, Trico observes that more and more people are coming to this small beach paradise to surf, but also to enjoy the richness of what it has to offer. We can say that Venao has it all : the good waves, the beautiful sunsets, lots of activities to do, restaurants, bars and other attractions.

Tips from a surf instructor

When we asked Trico about what would be his main advice for anyone wanting to try surfing in Venao for the first time, is answer is simple :

“The more you think about it, the less you will do it. You will never know until you try. Just come and try it!”

The experienced teacher explains that people coming from abroad without surf skills tend to be a bit afraid about the ocean. Some people tend to think about what negative things can happen while surfing, worrying about not being good enough to swim or any other danger. He suggests focusing on what can actually be good about trying to surf for the first time and to simply find a good instructor to learn the basics. Getting a few surf lessons with a certified instructor is a must to enjoy a better surf experience and most of all, to do it in the safest way possible. As more and more people are drawn to the magical playa Venao and want to try surfing for the first time, Trico stresses the importance of learning the basics to respect the other surfers and the ocean itself. Also, he adds, anyone visiting Venao should have consideration for the local community itself, so that everybody can enjoy this paradise peacefully and safely.
